As an editor, I aim to work with my authors rather than for them. I will never tell you what to do to “fix” your manuscript or force you to make changes. Instead, I’ll guide you to take an authentic, introspective look at why and how your story could shine even brighter.
To put things simply, I’m not about telling you what to fix. I want us to work together to determine why it needs fixing and how we’re going to move forward.
I offer a variety of editing services based on your individual needs. If you’re unsure of what service would best serve your manuscript, send me a message or book a free consultation.
Developmental Editing
This is what I like to call the “ideas and dreams” stage of edits. Before you waste time and energy on a manuscript that’s meandering, confusing, or holier than a slice of Swiss cheese (trust me, we’ve all been there), make sure the story on the page does the story in your head justice.
Using your manuscript, outlines, and scene lists, we will look at the overarching structure of your manuscript for narrative sequence, clarity, themes, character and plot arcs, and other big-picture concepts. During developmental edits, we focus on the art of storycraft, what your story says. We will assess and work through these concepts via outlines (if you’re a pantser, this might be a leap of faith), comprehensive editing letters, and coaching calls.
Developmental editing rates vary on the size and scope of the project. Coaching calls and notes are included in the price quote. Annotated returns depend on which resources are used. Please schedule a consultation to receive a specialized quote.
While I don’t offer comprehensive book coaching outside #WriteMentor, I’m proud to partner with best-selling author and professional book coach Camille Campins-Adams.
If you’re looking for a seasoned professional to coach you all the way through the writing process, contact me for an introduction.
Content Editing
It’s not enough to have a good story. You also have to write a good story.
If developmental edits are what your story says (storycraft), content edits have everything to do with how you say it (prose). This is where we zoom in and talk about voice, tension, pacing, continuity, dialogue, and other narrative concepts that make your writing clear and compelling.
This service also includes a comprehensive editing letter and one-hour coaching call every 20,0000 words.
Line editing rates start at $0.02 a word. Coaching calls and editing letters are included in these prices.
Line Editing
This is the image that comes to mind when most people think about editing—dotting your i’s and crossing your t’s. This is where we focus on the baseline mechanics of grammar, spelling, and readability rather than concepts and storyline. This service would be right for you if you’re looking to have something polished and prepared for professional and/or public readers.
Line editing rates start at $0.02 a word.
